Volkswagen conducted a recent study about UK drivers, most specifically those who drive vans. They have stated that at least 25 per cent of drivers do not consider the fuel they use on a daily basis, at least if they drive vans for a company. These findings have also led to claims that drivers are not the only ones who are guilty of misusing fuel rather than seeking fuel efficiency. Many fleet operators have stated that they do not take an active role in improving fuel use and reducing their monthly fuel costs.

It is easy for a company to try to enforce better fuel protocols. All one has to do is use some type of GPS trackers that will record the individual vehicle information such as whether there is excessive idling or speeding. It also can tell a company if there is anything wrong with the routes or time spent on routes by drivers in a way to reduce the overall miss use of fuel.

The report stated that 42 per cent of van fleet operators were a part of the study. Of those 42 per cent only 18 per cent of van drivers were proactive regarding training to make their fuel usage a little better. Volkswagen is definitely showing that van operators and drivers are causing over expenditures on fuel. There is a simple solution to making sure this doesn’t continue. Of course, the van drivers and companies have to be willing to take advantage of the solutions available such as fleet tracking.

Tracking of the vehicles will show where changes can be made in fuel usage. For example, if a driver is prone to taking the longer route to a location it could be to gain more payment for their hourly work. It also means that the fuel is being used up quicker. To prevent this, a GPS device can be installed to ensure that there is a good reason for a longer or alternative route such as a traffic accident rather than miss use of time and fuel.

The performance of each vehicle and driver will be recorded by the tracking device. These reports can be looked at each day, week, or month depending on how proactive a company may want to be with regards to changing their fuel efficiency. Drivers have to be just as cognizant as other employees in the company.
