If you’ve been looking out for affordable laptop computers, you might have run across the terms “refurbished” or “used” laptop computers. It’s important to know the difference between the two terms when you buy laptop computers on a budget.

One of the differences between a used and refurbished laptop is the price. The former are usually cheaper because it’s just that – used and with no repairs carried out on it. On the other hand, refurbished laptop computers cost slightly more but tend to come with a warranty, unlike most used laptops. Hardware and software problems are virtually nonexistent with such laptops, as the factory/manufacturer restoration has taken care of it.

Refurbishment makes a lot of sense when you consider the money you save, as opposed to the amount spent buying a brand new laptop. When you buy laptop computers that have been restored, it’s like getting something practically brand new but at a much lower price. Missing keys on the keyboard would have been replaced and bug-free software is loaded and ready for use. Compare this to a used laptop, on which you might very well have to carry out extensive repairs, and a new laptop, which costs more but may not come bundled with a complete operating system, and it makes sense to get a refurbished unit.

When it comes to warranties, manufacturers naturally provide support for new laptop computers. It’s also possible for refurbished laptop computers to come with warranties of their own provided they’re restored by authorized parties. Thus, you would also receive technical support for a refurbished laptop but pay a comparatively lower price to own one. Buying a used laptop can be a risky affair if the seller is less than scrupulous or unhelpful when technical issues arise.

What you see is what you get with a refurbished one. The specifications you receive are the same as that described on the box. With a used laptop though, it can be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. Unless you have the chance to test it before buying it, you’ll never be absolutely certain you’re getting what you paid for. Buying a used laptop is considered a last resort, such as where a computer is needed for immediate use.
