December Speaker
On December 11, 2007, Rob Fellman, manager of the local PC Professor franchise, presented an
interesting talk on “How Microsoft VISTA will change our Lives.” Windows Vista is an operating system
used on personal computers including home and business desktops and laptops.
Rob states that Microsoft is rolling out its new system, and like it or not, it will transpose our lives. He
discussed upgrading to Vista, and if so, what version or should you get a new desktop or laptop with
Vista pre-installed?
His Advise
Vista is an improvement over Microsoft’s operating system XP. But do not buy it for your current
computer as you may encounter problems with the installation. Vista is a “Hog.” However, if you are
purchasing a new computer, buy the computer with the Vista operating system. Microsoft releases
service packs for its Windows operating systems to fix problems and to add features. Update to
Service Pack 1 for Vista when it becomes available which should address the issues users have with
Vista.
Several attendees had already purchased Vista. He also informed the 62 attendees that the Macintosh
computer is excellent, but it is extremely difficult to find technical help for any problem that arises.
Rob proved to be extremely knowledgeable about computers and was an interesting speaker. He
answered questions from the audience. Coffee, cookies, and conversations took place after the
meeting, and Rob stayed to answer some questions on a one-to-one basis.
PC World Comments on Windows Vista
On-line, PC World had an article that stated: “Windows Vista made its biggest leap yet in November --
the operating system was in use on nearly one out of ten Internet-connected computers last month,
according to a research firm. Vista's exact share rose about one percentage point to 9.19 percent in
November, up from 7.94 percent in October, according to Net Applications. In contrast, Vista's
predecessor, Windows XP, fell by about one percentage point from 79.41 percent of all Internet-
connected computers in October to 78.37 percent in November, according to Net Applications.
Meanwhile, the Mac platform's share continued to grow, reaching nearly seven per cent.
For Our New Computer Users
Our programs may seem too complicated for you. BUT if you leave our meetings learning one or two
new computer tips that you did not know prior to our meeting, you have started the road to becoming
a computer literate. We have all been there before and know the frustration of learning to use a new
computer.
Can’t believe your eyes? Want a record of an amazing Windows moment? Windows has a build in
camera to let you take pictures of the screen and save them in graphics files. Here is how to
immortalize your electronic triumphs. To copy the whole screen, press PRINT SCREEN. To copy only
the active window, press ALT-PRINT SCREEN. (If your keyboard has function keys running across the
top, the PRINT SCREEN key should be to the right of the F12 key). If not, search your keyboard.
We are always looking for new faces and ideas. Bring both to our meetings, and
see what you may get from joining the Hunters Run Computer Club. Your dues
pay for our speakers. You can print out a membership application from our Web
Site.
