Glass and brass doorknob sets are a wonderful way to upgrade your existing home hardware with a touch of elegance and detail. Available in several varieties and designs, sometimes the task of choosing a new doorknob can be overwhelming. Online retailers and hardware stores typically have four main types of interior doorknob available: Single Dummy, Double Dummy, Passage and Privacy sets. It is important to understand the differences between these styles to save you time and frustration when it comes time to install your new doorknobs.

Single Dummy

Double Dummy

Passage Knobs

Privacy Knobs

Single dummy and double dummy glass doorknob sets are both knobs that do not turn and have no latch mechanism. The difference between these styles is a single dummy glass doorknob is a knob on the exterior of the door and a rosette plate on this interior (no knob) to anchor it in place. Double dummy glass doorknobs have a knob on either side of the door. Note: double dummy doorknobs are for one door – this style cannot be “split” and installed on two separate doors. Single and double dummy glass doorknob sets are traditionally used on bifold doors (or in the case of the double dummy on a French door in combination with a passage or privacy set).

Passage style doorknob sets have a functioning latch mechanism but do not lock. They are typically used for closets, interior doors that do not require locks or in entryway sets (in combination with a deadbolt).

Privacy glass doorknob sets have a functioning latch mechanism and a push pin lock that is great for bathrooms and bedrooms. A safety lock allows the door to be opened from the outside if necessary (this is a great feature for parents with small children). Privacy sets do not require a key to be locked or unlocked and should not be used for exterior doors unless used with a separate deadbolt.

Doorknob sets are readily available online as well as in many home decorating catalogs. Look for quality construction (brass rosettes and hardware) and be sure to ask questions. Understanding the types of doorknob sets available will help you select the right type of doorknob for your home. These doorknob sets are available online through LookInTheAttic & Company and they offer free hardware help and assistance.
